A new exciting feature arrives at FPL in 2025/26 who will see the players rewarded for defensive contributions – and that will change our way of playing Fantasy Premier League forever.
Friday morning, FPL announced the long -awaited introduction of defensive contributions – a new way of scoring points that will see the external field players have granted additional points for defensive actions during a first League match.
For defenders, these actions are releases, blocks, interceptions and plated. Thus, when a defender reaches 10 of these defensive actions in a match, he will receive 2 FPL points. Not bad, huh?
For field environments and attackers, the same actions as clearances, blocks, interceptions and plated apply, but they are also rewarded for recovery.
Unlike defenders, however, field circles and attackers will have to obtain 12 of these defensive actions instead of 10 to receive 2 FPL points. The defensive contribution points are capped at 2 points per game for all the players.

How does it work?
As mentioned above, this season, any defender who reaches a total combined of 10 authorizations, blocks, interceptions and plated in a single match will mark two FPL points.
“It is similar to the fact that when a goalkeeper makes three stops, he earns an additional point in the fantasy,” said the Official FPL website.
“But unlike the safeguarding points, the defensive contribution points will be capped at two points per game, so if a defender is 20 cbitter in a match, he would only collect two points, not four – although they can get other awards via the bonus points system.”
What defenders could obtain the most defensive contribution points in FPL?
The FPL website has examined the historic data to underline which players seem ready to benefit from the new defensive contribution points – and it seems that central defenders will massively benefit from the new rules.
In fact, every 10 best defenders of this statistic in 2024/25 were the central defenders, James Tarkowski of Everton paving the way on 44 points. He obtained defensive contribution points in 22 of his 33 departures for the Toffees, a success rate of 66.7%.
“Tarkowski was by far the most reliable Backline’s asset for defensive contribution points (DC) in recent campaigns,” added the Scout. “Indeed, he would have been defender No. 1 of this metric in each of the last four seasons.”

Here is how fans on social networks reacted to the introduction of defensive contribution points.
One of them said: “Excellent adding. Enriching recitants but not creating a too complicated rating system. Fair Play!” And a second wrote: “Finally the defensive fields will not be useless.”
A third commented: “Thus, the fields of field which are good for directing the press playing for very pressing pressing teams will have a slight advantage. On the other hand, the defenders who play for teams who are seated in deep blocks could have more blocks or clearances but which could also concede. Interesting, it will be fun.”
A fourth wrote: “GOOO, great to see the point notation system evolve”, and a fifth added: “It will make things happen massively and will take some time to get used to it.
