The group’s group phase from Germany to the Women’s Euro may not have planned, but the eight winners put all the setbacks behind them while they are preparing to face France in the quarter-final, coach Christian Wueck said on Friday.
Germany was beaten 4-1 by Sweden and defender Carlotta Wamser sent its latest match C in a performance below normal which allowed them to finish second in the ranking.
This has set up a successful confrontation between Germany and France, which Wueck considers favorites for the confrontation of Saturday in Basel.
“If you look at the raw figures, the French have won nine points in the group phase, we have won six, which is why I think the French are the favorites,” Wueck told journalists.
The Germans had five days to overcome the unexpected defeat of the Swedes, who returned home to the Germans after losing their quarter-final 3-2 in penalties in England on Thursday.
“It is incredibly important that the disappointment of this match (in group) against Sweden has now disappeared,” said Wueck.
“I think we have managed to make sure that we are not just impatiently waiting for this quarter -final, but that we are approaching this direct elimination phase in such a way that it is now very clear for us that the performance on the field will decide whether we stay in the tournament or not.”
Wueck said he expected his players to give him a much better account when they meet France at St Jakob-Park-Park stadium to decide who will take the last place in the semi-finals.
“I know that the euphoria and the desire to enter this game are definitely there now. This is why it was good … that we had so long to treat the match against Sweden,” said Wueck.
