FIFA ‘Strip’ Eight other title clubs after decision taken on Man Utd, Liverpool and Man City

FIFA has stripped eight additional clubs of a major title in the middle of their decision on Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Earlier this month, Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 to win the title of the 2025 club World Cup.

Although the Club World Cup has already taken place every year since 2005, FIFA has made the decision to officially pronounce Chelsea as the first “world champion”.

According to The Daily Mail, the former winners of the Club World Cup, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City, will now be called “FIFA intercontinental champions”.

It is a differentiation of Intercontinental Cup FIFA, a new brand of a tournament of the same name which sees each of the six teams which won the continental cup of their Confederation in competition in a mini-tournoi.

Chelsea is not guaranteed to defend its title during the Next Club World Cup in 2029, because tournament holders do not yet receive automatic qualification.

Liverpool, United and City all hope to meet the qualification criteria over the next three years and actually “reconquer” their title of world champion.

Liverpool won the club World Cup in 2019, while City was the last winners in the previous format in 2023.

United, on the other hand, raised the trophy in 2008. The three teams had won the Champions League earlier in the year of their success.

And seven other clubs are no longer recognized as world football champions.

Real Madrid is a five -time winner of the club World Cup in its previous format, but will now have to win it in its new format. However, they are still the title champions of the Intercontinental Cup.

The triple winner Barcelona is also affected, as well as the two winners of Bayern Munich and the Corinthians.

Finally, Sao Paulo (winners of 2005), Internacional (2006), AC Milan (2007) and Inter Milan (2010) are the other teams that can no longer say themselves world champions.

PSG, the Pyramids, Al Hilal and Cruz Azul are the already confirmed teams for the Club 2029 World Cup – but all the above teams can always qualify by their side by winning continental titles or by meeting the criteria for classification of specific clubs set by FIFA.
