Ex-Arsenal Wonderkid is only the English footballer to play for Barcelona this century before Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford will follow in the footsteps of Marcus McGuane and will become the second English to represent Barcelona this century after having finished his dream move to the Spanish giants.

After landing in Catalonia on Sunday evening, Rashford joined the manager of Barcelona Hansi Flick and the sports director of the Ciutat Esportiva Traphing on Monday before its official unveiling on Wednesday.

Rashford, which will wear shirt number 14 in the coming months, joined a loan agreement from a season of Manchester United which would include an option to buy for 35 million euros, which is equivalent to around 30.3 million pounds sterling.

As mentioned above, he will become the second English to play for Barcelona this century, seven years after Marcus McGuane made his first team debut for the Catalan team.

McGuane, who joined the Barça d’Arsenal in 2018, replaced his Catalan Super Cup against Espanyol confrontation in March 2018 – a cameo that made him the first English to play for Barcelona since Gary Lineker 29 years earlier.

McGuane recently admitted that he was “not mentally ready” to face Barcelona so early in his career.

“I have the impression that when I was a little younger, I had much earlier and there were great expectations towards me and maybe I was not, I am not sure, mentally ready for everything,” said McGuane BBC Radio Bristol’s Sound of the City.

“I was not in the right state of mind to be able to deal with everything at certain times.

“I have the impression of having grown up, I learned my job. I had really difficult and difficult moments in football and I have the impression that it makes you more grateful for everything you have and certainly makes you mentally stronger, so I would not change it for the world.”

He added: “I remember entering the locker room the first time and being welcomed by tastes of Iniesta, Busquets, Messi, Pique, Suarez. Being a young boy where I was – I grew up in Woolwich – it’s a great contrast to this type of life.

“Going there opened my eyes there, it opened my eyes to the way people are humble, culture and how they are. I had fantastic opportunities there that I am going to take with me and cherish all my life.”

The midfielder would make a total of 24 appearances for Barcelona B and spent time on loan to the division Erste Teltar before leaving Spain to join Nottingham Forest, who was in the championship at the time.

Like his fate in Spain, McGuane fought for opportunities in the forest and in the summer of 2020, the midfielder joined Oxford United on a loan throughout the season, where he would make 21 appearances before joining a permanent agreement.

He would continue to play 152 games through a four -year spell with Oxford and prospered under Liam Manning, who certainly drawn the best party of McGuane because he finally obtained a visit to the Bristol City championship in 2024.

This week, McGuane joined League One One, Huddersfield Town for a three -year contract.
