Newcastle United striker Anthony Gordon apologized to his teammates and supporters after being sent during their 3-2 defeat in the Premier League by Liverpool to St James’ Park on Monday.
Gordon was sent in the first half of a stop for a reckless tackle which left the gaujon marks at the back of the calf of Liverpool captain, Virgil Van Dijk – his first yellow card was upgraded to a red by referee Simon Hooper.
Although they were reduced to 10 men, the hosts went up a deficit of two goals before the 16 -year -old winger of Liverpool, Rio Ngumoha, won a winner of the 100th minute for the reigning champions.
“I want to sincerely apologize to my teammates and fans”, “ Gordon posted on social networks. “My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and I cheated on the tackle.”
The 24 -year -old English international also apologized to Van Dijk.
“I would never intend to attack someone like that. We talked after and he knows it”, ” The former Everton winger added.
Newcastle visits Leeds United’s next visit on Saturday.
