
Wayne Hennessey, the most popular goalkeeper in the history of Wales, retired at the age of 38 after represented his country in 109 games, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) said on Wednesday.
Hennessey made more than 100 league appearances each for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace, reaching the FA Cup final in 2016 with the latter. He was in Nottingham Forest last season but did not appear.
The player born in Bangor was part of the Wales team who reached the semi-finals of the euros in 2016, also appearing in the 2022 World Cup. He played for the last time for Wales in November 2023 in a friendly match against Gibraltar.
“I decided to end my player career, I look back with gratitude and forward with optimism while I take the next steps in my football trip”, ” Said Hennessey in a statement.
