Diogo Jota’s family should be in Anfield on Friday for the first Liverpool Premier League match against Bournemouth.
The league champions plan to pay tribute to their former striker, who died at the age of 28 in a car accident in northern Spain last month alongside his brother Andre Silva, who was 25 years old.
A moment of silence will take place at all Premier League matches this weekend, with players wearing black armbands, while messages and images will be broadcast on the big screens of the stadiums.
Liverpool confirmed that there will also be a tribute led by fans at Anfield, with a special mosaic unveiled in the Kop and the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand during the period of silence.
In his program notes for Friday’s match, Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, said: “We know that it will be a very emotional opportunity, since it is the first championship match that we have played since we lost Diogo and Andre.
“As I said before, the tributes that have been paid in the world of football, and especially within the LFC community, were really special, and I know that this evening we will meet to honor them once again.
“I believe that Diogo’s wife, her children and family will be present and it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and our support because they deal with this most tragic situation. We are still there for them.”
Liverpool players will display their own tribute with an “Forever 20” emblem printed on their stadium shirts and jackets. This will remain in place for the season.
The club won a 20th record title of the English League last season with Jota bearing shirt number 20, which the club decided to retire after consulting the wife of former international Portugal Rute Cardoso and other members of the Jota family.
Wolves – The other Premier League Jota team played for – also tributes planned for their first game of the season in Manchester City on Saturday.
