Liverpool confirms the permanent commemorative sculpture plans to honor Diogo Jota
Liverpool must create a permanent tribute to remember the former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident earlier this month, the Premier League champions announced on Saturday.
The father of three children, Jota, died alongside his brother on July 3, 11 days after marrying his long -term partner Rute Cardoso, after their car came out of the road and caught fire in northern Spain.
A large number of tributes in the shape of flowers, scarves, cards and jerseys have been left to Anfield, which, according to Liverpool, would constitute the basis of the permanent monument.
“The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield were gradually withdrawn during the last week and carefully separated and stored safely”, “ The club said in a statement.
“Floral tributes will then be composed and used in flower beds on all club sites.
“The remaining artifacts will be recycled by a specialized company and used to help create a permanent commemorative sculpture which will become a future focal point of memory in Anfield.”
The club also said that players will have an “ Forever 20 ” emblem – referring to the shirt number now retired from Jota – printed on their stadium shirts and jackets for the season.
Liverpool paid tribute to Jota and Silva during their friendly in Preston a fortnight ago and will hold its main commemoration, which will show off a mosaic of fans and a minute of silence, before launching the new season at home in Bournemouth on August 15.
