IFAB considering the most controversial change of rule in football still before the World Cup in 2026 and fans are furious

Legislators are considering one of the largest football upheavals before the 2026 World Cup in the United States.

When Var was introduced in 2017, it announced a huge progression in the book of football rules, but also one of the most controversial. Aiming to reduce controversial decisions, Var only added the debate on offside, Hands balls and penalties.

And now, IFAB (International Football Association Board) football rules could be determined to considerably extend the decisions in which Var can get involved, as well as to introduce a new rule concerning the penalties which are already welcomed by the fury of the supporters.

According to the TimesIFAB plans to expand Var discounts with discussions that already take place at senior football levels. If they are disconnected at the next IFAB annual meeting – when new rules are confirmed each year – the new laws would come into force from June 1, 2026, in time for the World Cup in the United StatesMexico and Canada later this month.

Under the proposals reported, Var would be able to intervene on more “decisions based on facts”, such as the reversal of the corners where the ball was clearly awarded. The Var could also be allowed to review the second yellow cards, where technology is currently not allowed to be used.

The second reservations leading to a red card and therefore have an impact on the game on a larger scale, the IFAB would consider the merits of the expansion of the Var delivery to help those responsible on the ground. For example, Arsenal was furious last season when Declan Rice was sent against Brighton after a second reservation to block a free kick, but Var could not offer a second look.

The report indicates that IFAB has been reluctant in the past to include the second yellow cards in the Var and would like this to delay correspondence more.

And there is another proposed change which has already caused concerns among fans like IFAB envisaged a new radical rule which would see the rebounds prohibited from kicks. It is reported that the proposals would see the ball declared “dead” if the goalkeeper saves a kick, which means that the attacking team cannot then mark on follow -up. However, it is added that the master body is likely to want to see long trials to such a significant change after discussions that may not be possible before the next AGA in March 2026.

Reacting on social networks, the fans were skeptical of the modifications, as we said: “If they examine the dismissal of the two yellow cards, they should review the yellow cards, not just the second yellow. As is the most logical approach.” Another fan added: “No follow-up on the pens? Why are they determined to ruin the game ??”

While another user said, “Why don’t we completely prohibit football, because they are so determined to kill him?”
