Brighton signed Carlos Baleba in August 2023 to be the successor to Moises Caido. Two seasons later and he looks like one of the best field circles in the Premier League.
He is a quality defender before quality, traveling the middle of the park and slamming in the plated before an opponent was comfortable on the ball.
Baleba can very well attack and tackle very well, but he also has a brilliant appreciation of space and timing, allowing him to intercept the opposition passes and put Brighton on the front.
Baleba is a defender higher than average when his team is on the rear foot. In the moments when Brighton loses the ball and must withdraw, he is often the man who leads hunting to find the ball.
When he is on the ball, he prefers to keep things simple, focusing on the conservation of possession rather than on breeze-lines. He likes a switch pass (see his note “launched” above for an assessment of his passes over longer distances), but his attacked contributions are a bonus in the midfielder of Brighton, rather than a key component.
