“ We must be at our best to beat Spain ”, explains the captain of England Williamson

The captain of England Leah Williamson admits that Spain is “the best in what they do” but is convinced that his team can compete with the defending world champions in the final of Euro 2025 on Sunday.

“Tomorrow, we are playing a match against the world champions who continue to prove themselves in many times in the way they play football,” Williamson told St Jakob-Park journalists on the eve of the match.

“They are a fantastic football team, they are the best in what they do, and we are very aware of it, but we think we are also quite good in certain regions.

“We have to be our best to beat Spain, but I think they will also have to be their best to fight.

“I think there is a lot of respect between the two teams, and I would hesitate to say that we are outsiders in this scenario.”

England hopes to keep the European championship title they won on home at home in 2022, but the match is also a rehearsal of the 2023 World Cup final, in which Spain has triumphed 1-0 in Sydney.

There is an increasing rivalry between nations, England saving in addition to time when they clashed in the quarterfinals in Euro 2022.

The parties have also already faced each other twice this year in the UEFA Nations League, England winning 1-0 in Wembley in February.
