Santi Cazorla, 40, signs an extension of the contract to Real Oviedo


The former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla, 40, has signed a new one -year contract with the Real Oviedo childhood club while they are preparing to return to the Spanish high flight.

Cazorla who returned to Club 2023, played a key role last season when Oviedo was promoted to La Liga for the first time in 24 years.

He scored the decisive goal in the Liga 2 semi-final in the semi-finals against Almeria, leaving the bench to convert a free kick and win a 3-2 global victory.

The former Spanish international then marked a penalty during the second stage of the final when they were beating the CD Mirands in more time.

“With this renewal, Santi Cazorla, symbol and emblem of Oviedo, proves that dreams, when they are prosecuted with the heart, come true,” said the Trendian club.

“Real Oviedo secures the leadership of a footballer who embodies the values of the club like a few others, on and off the field.”

Cazorla who will be 41 years old in December, scored five goals and recorded five assists in 35 games last season.

Twice European champion with Spain, the midfielder spent six years in Arsenal and made 180 appearances before leaving in 2018.

He suffered an Achilles injury in October 2016, continued to have 11 operations to heal the problem.

One of the operations has led to a gangrene with doctors telling Cazorla that he should be satisfied to walk again, not to mention playing.
