Job overview
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced administrative candidates to join the North East Mental Health and Deafness Service, based at Ashgrove on the grounds of St Nicholas Hospital in Gosforth.
The Mental Health and Deafness service is a small regional service covering the whole of the North East and North Cumbria, working with people who are deaf, who mainly use British Sign Language to communicate and who have mental health problems. The Service works with secondary care professionals to provide specialist assessment and support for mental health needs.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role will be:
- Experience of working in a secretarial or administrator role.
- Fast, accurate typing and note-taking skills are essential.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
- A good understanding of patient information system would be beneficial, however training will be provided.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
- An awareness of Deaf culture and Level 1 British Sign Language would be an advantage however, full training on Deaf culture will be provided

The ideal candidate should have excellent communication, customer service and organisational skills, as well as a working knowledge of office procedures including IT skills.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Word-processing skills at Level 3 (OCR/RSA Level 3 or equivalent qualification and/or demonstrable relevant experience) eg; NVQ Level 3 Level 3 in Business Administration (or equivalent)
- Audio Typing qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience
- General level of education to O-Level/ GCSE or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 3 Level 3 in Customer Care (or equivalent)
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of NHS Policies and Procedures
- Working knowledge of Microsoft applications, including e-mail communication
- Ability to maintain and update Patient Information Systems e.g. RiO
- Good working knowledge of office procedures
- Previous secretarial/clerical experience
- Ability to uphold confidentiality at all times
- Able to prioritise and plan own workload
Desirable criteria
- Experience in processing CPA, Mental Health Act and Safeguarding documentation
- Experience using stock ordering systems and petty cash systems
- Experience of working with medical records filing systems
Skills and Knowledge
