The Unit Clerk plays a key administrative and clerical role on a healthcare unit, ensuring smooth communication between nursing staff, physicians, and patients. You will be responsible for maintaining patient records, managing admissions and discharges, transcribing medical orders, and providing vital support to the care team.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle incoming phone calls, take messages, and route calls to appropriate staff.
- Greet patients, visitors, and staff, and assist with checking in/out procedures. Maintain and organize patient records, charts, and admission/discharge forms.
- Transcribe physicians’ and nurses’ orders from paper to electronic record systems.
- Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Order and manage unit supplies and maintain inventory.
- Assist nursing staff by communicating updates, messages, and patient information.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information (HIPAA compliance).
- Perform other clerical duties such as filing, data entry, and document preparation.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology (preferred).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and clinical information systems.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and multitasking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive patient data.
Desired Experience
- Previous experience in a clinical or hospital setting is a plus, but not required.
- Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems or medical clerical workflows.
