Job summary

Ward 26B is an elective surgical ward caring for patients undergoing planned surgical procedures booked through the Trust’s waiting list coordinators. The ward admits and cares for patients from a range of surgical specialties.

In addition, during periods of reduced elective activity, the ward supports patient flow by receiving and caring for non-elective surgical patients from Ward 32B.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of high-quality patient care for patients admitted directly from theatre recovery (Mediroom) and Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a broad range of advanced surgical nursing skills, including:

  • Stoma care and bowel management
  • Complex wound care
  • Nasogastric tube insertion and management
  • PICC line care and management
  • Administration and monitoring of syringe drivers
  • Management of Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
  • Management of epidural analgesia

The post holder will provide day-to-day supervision, support, and guidance to Health Care Support Workers, student nurses, and other junior members of the nursing team, contributing to a positive learning environment and promoting high standards of clinical practice.The role requires flexibility to work a full range of shifts, including:

Long days: 07:00 to 19:30

Nights: 19:00 to 07:30

Weekends and bank holidays as required

Main duties of the job

  • Registered nurse with current NMC licence to practice and experience within an acute hospital setting.
  • Evidence of continued professional development i.e. a professional portfolio and participation in appraisal and development review.
  • To have achieved a recognised teaching & assessing qualification.
  • Completion of training for additional clinical skills required in the ward/department
  • Green card training for the use of pumps or machinery relevant to the ward or department.
  • Evidence of attendance at mandatory training appropriate to the role.
  • Competence in the use of computers and electronic communication systems or expectation to develop existing skills further as the needs of the service dictate.
  • Evidence of an ability to critically appraise and utilise research to maintain and improve patient care.
  • Sound knowledge of health promotion issues to ensure junior staff, patients and carers are provided with education, support and advice as required.
  • Evidence of experience and knowledge of the importance of resource management including protocols for staff utilisation, equipment, and products for clinical care.
  • Organise and participate in the delivery of high standard, evidence-based nursing care.

Person Specification

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse, with current live NMC registration / Student awaiting pin
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Teaching and assessing qualification or willing to undertake after 2 years post registration (secured a position on this type of course)

Work Experience

Essential

  • Completion of training for extended roles required by the ward / department. i.e. IV drug administration, Cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation, PCA and Epidural training
  • At least 12 months recent experience as a Registered Nurse in either an acute hospital setting, surgical setting, admission/ emergency setting OR a qualifying student who has completed a placement within surgery or an admissions unit

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential

  • Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Basic computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service i.e. HIS, Acis, Email use.
